Police continue to hold radio presenter

Kampala- Police continues to detain a Top radio journalist, Richard Kasule a.k.a Kamagu at the Central Police Station, Kampala, without charging him.

The Human Rights Network for Journalists-Uganda yesterday called upon the police “to be transparent in handling this matter and to accord the journalist fair treatment and take him to court or release him unconditionally”.

Police chased away people who had come to visit Kamagu at the station. An officer in a police uniform physically assaulted the journalist.

Kamagu has since Tuesday written three statements but is not sure of the charges to be brought against him. It is widely said that he could be charged with inciting violence because he hosted the Kampala deputy Lord Mayor, Mr Sulaiman Kiddandala, hours after the Lord Mayor was controversially impeached.

The two other journalists, Mulindwa Mukasa and Halima Uthman, who had been arrested when they came to police to rescue Kamagu, were released. Mulindwa was charged with obstruction.
