A former police officer and one woman, were killed on Jinja-Iganga highway in Kakira on Friday afternoon when a taxi, registration no. UAZ 772H was knocked by a trailer UAF 546P/UAC 999Y loaded with stones heading to Jinja.

Eyewitnesses, who accompanied the body of the ex police officer Mr John Mukosya, to the mortuary, said the taxi driver was speeding and on approaching a junction was knocked by the trailer. Passengers who were injured were taken to Jinja Referral hospital for treatment.

Mr Mukosya was a former police driver had who retired and was going back to Mbale from Kampala before connecting to Manafwa District where he had established his home, said one of the police officers who worked with him in the force.

However, Kiira Regional Police Spokesperson Ms Diana Nanduwula who confirmed the incident said only one person had died and that was the police officer. “I was only informed of one person dead, a former police officer and I am yet to get full details of the number of passengers on board as well as the cause of the accident,” she said. But nurses at the hospital say the woman died from her injuries while being worked on at the hospital. She has been identified as Priscilla Atuhairwe. Friends say she was travelling to Mbale to attend the introduction ceremony of a friend.

Ms Nandawula said the driver of the trailer abandoned the vehicle and is on the run. Police are looking for his whereabouts.
