Police officer set for trial on defilement

KAMPALA. City Hall Magistrate’s Court has committed a police officer to High Court for trial on defilement charges.
Magistrate Moses Nabende committed Detective Corporal Andrew Mugume, attached to the Prime Minister’s office, after the prosecution informed court that investigations into the case had been completed.
Prosecution contends that Mugume pounced on the girl aged 15 who was vending cakes and fish outside the Prime Minister’s office in November 2016.

“…the accused requested the victim to go with him at his home in Ntinda police barracks so that he could buy some cakes and fish. The victim accepted, being familiar with the accused who was a friend to her aunt,” the indictment reads in part.
The State attorney, Ms Orogot Pamela, contends that the victim boarded a taxi with the accused and upon entering the accused’s house he locked the door and asked her for sexual intercourse which she rejected.
It is further alleged that the accused overpowered her and defiled her.

The indictment further states that when the victim fell sick in January this year, her aunt took her for medical examination which confirmed she was pregnant.
The girl confided in her that she was defiled by her friend Mugume. The aunt reported to police who arrested Mugume. He was examined by a police surgeon and found HIV-positive.
