Police warn Mbabazi over allegations of killed supporters

Independent presidential candidate Amama Mbabazi (pictured) on Thursday said his supporters have become a State target as uncertainty continues to shroud the whereabouts of his head of security, Christopher Aine (inset).

KAMPALA. Police have warned the independent presidential candidate Amama Mbabazi over claims that his supporters are being kidnapped and killed by the state.

Police on Friday said the statement released on Thursday by Mr Mbabazi on the alleged brutalization of the Go Forward members was biased, baseless and unfounded.
“The statement of Hon Mbabazi is devoid of truth; it is misleading, inciting and calculated to arouse unnecessary anxiety in the public. It is unfortunate that the statement is made by a presidential candidate,” Mr Fred Enanga the police spokesperson said in statement.

Mr Mbabazi said on Thursday that his supporters have on various occasions been targeted for arrest, assault, “disappearance” and killings. The statement came at the time when uncertainty regarding the whereabouts of Mbabazi’s security head Mr Christopher Aine continues to shroud.

On Thursday a picture of a dead body said to have some likeness of Mr Aine was published in a local tabloid, sparking off a frenzy of debate in the media.
However, the police insisted that he was still alive and hiding thus refuting claims that he had been killed. Mr Mbabazi’s legal team said they have successfully filed a habeas corpus order but police say they are yet to be served.
