Policeman lynched in Makindye Division, Kampala

Police in Kampala are investigating circumstances under which one of their own, a probation Police constable was killed by a mob in Makindye Division.

Jimmy Anguyo, 27, who was attached to Katwe Police station was found dead by his colleagues at 3.00am a few moments after he was reportedly lynched by an angry mob over allegations of motorcycle robbery.

Reports indicate that the policeman had only withdrawn from duty around Kibuye Clock Tower at around 2.00am. He had reportedly complained of headache and his colleagues asked him to go rest but instead ended up dead.

It's reported that when Anguyo returned from duty, he put off his uniform and left his gun in his house at Katwe police barracks and moved out.

Sources indicate that Anguyo then walked to a bar in Makindye where he was mobbed over claims that he had stolen a motorcycle. It is not clear yet if police recovered any motorcycle in regards to the incident.

Anguyo's colleagues say he recently bought three motorcycles auctioned by police in Katwe but had not yet started using any of them.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigire, says two people have been arrested in connection to the incident.

"We are still interrogating them and they are helping us with investigations on how we can get the rest," he said.

Asked if the deceased had any identification on himself, Owoyesigire said although Anguyo had an Identity card, he was not given time to present it. He says police are investigating the matter to bring all the suspects to book.

The two suspects are being held at Central Police Station in Kampala. Police say they cannot reveal the identities of the suspects as it could jeopardise investigations.

Anguyo leaves behind a widow and one child.
