Retired Archbishop Nkoyoyo is dead

Retired Archbishop Livingstone Mpalanyi Nkoyoyo has died.

The Church of Uganda archbishop, Stanley Ntagali said the retired Archbishop died on Friday at about 11:40am at Kampala Hospital where he had been admitted.

His body has been taken to the hospital mortuary.

Archbishop Ntagali and other religious leaders are in a closed door meeting.

"Our first Chancellor and former Archbishop of the Church of Uganda Bishop Livingstone Mpalanyi Nkoyoyo has gone to be with the Lord" a message posted on social media by Uganda Christian University read. It was followed with several messages of tribute and empathy from family members and friends.

Dr Nkoyoyo has since December 2016 been undergoing cancer treatment. He returned to the country on June 29, 2017 from the United Kingdom (UK) where he was receiving medical attention for cancer of the throat.

His return had given a lot of hope to Christians and Ugandans with hundreds of people converging at Namirembe Cathedral where a special thanksgiving service was held.

The fully packed service was led by Namirembe Diocese Bishop Wilberforce Kityo Luwalira and was attended by the retired archbishop's family members, church leaders, government officials, Buganda Kingdom officials among others.

Dr Nkoyoyo then told church before offering his blessing that his sickness journey has been painful but full of hope. He was called home this morning.
