Two brothers knocked by speeding taxi

KALUNGU. Grief has engulfed residents of Bbajja village, Lukaya Town Council in Kalungu District after a speeding taxi knocked two students, leaving one dead.
According to Mr Andrew Mukasa, a bodaboda rider in Lukaya Town who witnessed the accident on Tuesday evening, the two brothers were riding on a bicycle when they got knocked.

Mr Steven Nkugwa, a 14-year -old S.3 student of Comprehensive High SS, Bajja in Lukaya Town Council died on spot while his brother, Andrew Lukwata was rushed to the Masaka Regional Referral Hospital where he is currently receiving treatment.
They were reportedly on their way from school and as they crossed the usually busy Kampala-Masaka highway, a speeding taxi Reg. No. UAX 209R knocked them.
All the occupants of the taxi which was coming from Masaka heading to Kampala escaped unhurt, according to eyewitness.
After the accident, the taxi driver identified by police as Muhammad Kalanzi took off but the ill-fated taxi was towered to Lukaya police station.

Kalungu District Police Commander, Latif Zaake said Kalanzi has a record of over speeding.
“We have found three unpaid receipts issued to him by our traffic officers due to over speeding and all are in his names,” Mr Zaake said.
Mr Zaake added that though the suspect took off, police are hunting for him to face the law.
