Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters Kibuli have arrested a Makerere University researcher Dr Stella Nyanzi on allegations that she abused President Museveni and his deceased mother.

Dr Nyanzi was arrested at Makerere University on Friday and driven to Special Investigations Division headquarters at Kireka where she is currently detained. She was holding a silent strike at Makerere after the university management failed to restore to her office despite the court ruling.

The CID spokes person, Superintendent of Police Vincent Ssekatte confirmed the arrest of Dr Nyanzi.

"We have her and detectives are yet to interrogate her," SP Ssekatte said.

It is alleged that Dr Nyanzi abused President Museveni and his deceased mother on September 16 on her Facebook page.

SP Ssekatte says she committed the offence of cyber harassment and offensive communication.

Detectives say it unlikely that they will be done with their investigations by today which means the lecturer is likely to spend the weekend in jail.

According to Section 25 of the Computer Misuse Act 2011 on offensive communication, “Any person who willfully and repeatedly uses electronic communication to disturb or attempts to disturb the peace, quiet or right of privacy of any person with no purpose of legitimate communication whether or not a conversation ensues commits a misdemeanour and is liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding twenty-four currency points or imprisonment not exceeding one year or both.”

Twenty four currency points is an equivalent of Shs480, 000.

This is the second time police are arresting Dr Nyanzi on allegations of abusing President Museveni and his family.

In April, 2017, Dr Nyanzi was picked from Mackinnon Suites Hotel in Nakasero where she was speaking to Rotarians about fundraising money for sanitary pads for school girls, and charged with two counts including cyber harassment contrary to section 24 (1)(2)(a) of the Computer Misuse Act 2011 and offensive communication contrary to section 25 of the Computer Misuse Act 2011.

She is still battling these charges at Buganda Road Magistrates court.
