Supreme Mufti Shiekh Zubairi Kayongo

Supreme Mufti Sheikh Zubairi Kayongo has passed on this morning at Aga Khan Hospital, Dar es salaam, Tanzania. His deputy, Sheikh Mahmoud Kibaate confirmed to Daily Monitor and added that Sheikh Kayongo had been hospitalized for two weeks.

Sheikh Kibaate further said the Supreme Mufti’s body is still at the hospital in Dar es salaam.

According to Kibuli Mosque spokesperson, Sheikh Hassan Kirya, the mufti had been hospitalized at Case Clinic for two weeks and later discharged.
“He has been battling Diabetes and high blood pressure,” Sheikh Kirya said.

At the time of his death he had gone to Tanzania for an official visit but his health deteriorated and was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on Thursday at around 9:30am.

His body will be taken to Dar es salaam main mosque for prayers. Burial arrangements are yet to be announced.

Who is Sheikh Kayongo
Sheikh Kayongo was born in Bbaale, Kayunga district to the late Hajji Sowedi Kayongo.

He studied at Katuumu Muslim School in Luweero district and later at Lamu Muslim College in Kenya. He started teaching Islamic studies in 1955.

Served as a deputy Mufti to Sheikh Luwemba in the 1980s. He also held the same post under Sheik Ahmad Mukasa when he was leading a faction based at Kibuli Mosque.

A member of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council's college of sheikhs.

He was also close to the Buganda Kingdom leadership at Mengo and heads a conflict resolution committee of one of Buganda's clans, the Kobe. He has residences in Kiteezi, on Gayaza road in Wakiso district and Lwamata in Kiboga district.
