KAMPALA. Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has said they have started demolishing structures and evicting residents on Mukwano Road to pave way for the Kampala flyover project.

In an interview yesterday, Mr Allan Ssempebwa, the UNRA media relations manager, said the exercise is the first phase of the project set to commence in January.

The affected structures include the Clock Tower, part of Kibuli CIID, Clock Tower Post Office, Uganda Railways Corporation staff quarters and the Electoral Commission. More than 100 florists on the road have also been ordered to vacate.
“We have been engaging the affected persons and we have paid them off. We bought the land and we need to clear the site and hand it over to the contractor to commence work by January 2019,” Mr Ssempebwa said.
The 3.5km project is estimated to cost Shs61b and stretches from Queens’ Way to Kitgum roundabout through Mukwano Road.

Mr David Lugoloobi, a florist, said UNRA has already paid them and they had given them a two-day ultimatum to vacate.
“We were paid between Shs450, 000 and Shs500,000 to vacate the premises,” he said.
