Kenyan governor dies after freak accident

Nyeri Governor Wahome Gakuru (inset) died following a grisly road crash on Tuesday morning.

The governor of Nyeri County in the Central Highlands of Kenya Wahome Gakuru passed on Tuesday morning following a freak motor accident at Kabati along the Thika-Sagana highway in Murang’a County.
He was rushed to Thika Level 5 Hospital for emergency treatment but succumbed to his injuries on arrival.

He died as medics prepared to airlift him to Nairobi for specialised care.
Murang'a County Commissioner John Elung'ata confirmed the death of Dr Gakuru.

Mr Elung'ata said Kabati is black spot and most motorists lose control whenever it rains.
Police said the governor's car had four occupants at the time of the crash; him, his personal assistant Albert Kaguru , his body guard Ahmed Abdi and the driver Samuel Kinyanjui wanyaga .
The personal assistant’s right hand and leg got broken and police were still looking for his wrist at the scene of the crash.

The bodyguard's legs were seriously injured while the driver is okay.
Police attributed the crash to a "tyre burst during heavy downpour."
The governor's body was moved to Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi.
They were heading to the capital for talk shows with a local radio and TV stations when the vehicle veered off the road and hit a rail guard.
Photos of the wreckage of the Mercedes Benz at the scene of the crash were doing rounds on social media for the better part of the morning,
Dr Gakuru becomes the second Nyeri governor to die in office after Governor Nderitu Gachagua, who died in February this year.
