Rugby Cranes 15s coach Peter Magona has chosen to step down as national team coach.

Magona informed the Uganda Rugby Union (URU) in a communiqué that he was seeking not to renew his two-year contract according to highly placed source yesterday.

“He thanked the Union’s Technical and Executive Committees for the faith they put in him to coach the Rugby Cranes,” said the source, adding that “But acknowledged the results had been below expectations.” His last match was the Elgon Cup in Kenya where Uganda were embarrassed 34-0 (and 51-21 on aggregate), a result that highlighted the abyss the game has sunk today.

Magona reportedly urged the Union to appoint a professional head coach or director of rugby as well as embark on an elite programme. He also thanked his assistant coaches Fred Mudoola and Herbert Wafuka, the backroom staff, players and fans for their unwavering support to the national team’s cause.

Former national rugby captain Magona was appointed coach in April, 2013. He took the reigns from Yayiro Kasasa. The 35-year old Magona played for Nile, Rhino, Impis and Heathens in a distinguished career. In 2009, he managed Heathens to a legendary clean sweep of domestic trophies.
