KAMPALA- After being whitewashed 3-0 in the opener of the ongoing World Championship Qualifier by hosts Kenya on Sunday, the Lady Volleyball Cranes salvaged some pride yesterday.

Tony Lakony’s girls defeated Seychelles 3-2 in a see-saw affair at the Karasani Indoor Gymnasium in Nairobi but will need a miracle of marginal proportions to reach the World Championship Finals in Italy later this September.

After Cape Verde pulled out at the 11th hour, only one of the five countries including Mozambique, Kenya and Tunisia can qualify for Italy showpiece.
Seychelles capitalised on Uganda’s mistakes on the net and cover to go up 2-0 with set scores of 25-19 and 25-22.

Uganda rallied through Josephine Nammanda, Eunice Amuron and Astreede Agaaba to take charge of the last three sets 25-17, 25-17 and 15-12.

“We are not tourists,” said coach Lakony. “Morale in our camp is still high and we believe we can make history in our country.”
Kenya’s win over Uganda on Sunday makes them outright favorites to qualify as no country is rated as highly as them.
