Onyango lends safe hands to Sseninde project

Jean Sseninde’s efforts to give underprivileged girls a chance to play football received a huge endorsement on Thursday at Villa Park.
Uganda Cranes goalkeeper Dennis Onyango, alongside sponsors Post Bank and La Cedri Forex Bureau, joined the Crested Cranes midfielder for the launch of the third edition of the Sseninde Women Football Development Camp (SWFDC).

“It is very good in life to help each other out, no one can do everything on their own,” Onyango, who turns out for South Africa side Mamelodi Sundowns, told the girls after a training session. “I love football because it teaches us how to work, respect and love each other. It is important that you learn this as youngsters and I am very proud to honour this invitation from Jean,” he added.

Not many footballers, let alone female ones, from Uganda will have the chance to play in the professional ranks of English football like Sseninde but the Crystal Palace cannot be faulted for not sharing her experience.

The third edition of the SWFDC tournament will be held at Star Times Stadium Lugogo on August 17 under the theme “our turn”. Eight local teams comprised of female players that do not represent any club in the elite league will have a chance to showcase their talent as Sseninde hopes to promote the ethos of inclusion and equality.
“We hope to have a few more international teams come in this time so that the girls can gain more exposure,” Sseninde said.
