Express will have at least six new faces when they lineup for the second round of the Azam Uganda Premier League.
At an unveiling done at the club offices in Mutundwe yesterday, club chairperson Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi announced the new team as the club prepares for the second round that kicks off on Saturday week.
The players who include former Cranes defender Ayub Kisalita as well as Alfred Leku and Joseph Ssemujju acquired on loan from Vipers are expected to boost the club’s fortunes after a disappointing first round.
The six-time league winners finished one place off the bottom of the 16-team log and will be looking to avoid a first ever relegation.
But Nakiwala who is also the Minister of State for Youth and Children Affairs and Fufa Vice President in charge of the league used the opportunity to demonstrate newfound financial stability.
“From previous meetings we pledged to improve the conditions at the club so that players can forget about the previous experiences. We want to eliminate situations that can hinder players from performing to their best ability,” she stated. She then proceeded to hand out salaries to the team coach Shafik Bisaso as well as the club players present.
“The most important things is paying not the method used. You journalists are the ones who say we do not pay players so let us do it in front of the cameras,” she in her defense of the act. Her reign has been dominated by a huge player and coaches turnover despite promises to stabilize the club.
This was meanwhile her first public appearance since she returned from a two-month break she took in November citing a busy schedule.
“Previously we had a very big squad yet our sponsor had also pulled out so we had to improvise,” she said of the club’s previous financial woes.
Club head coach Bisaso meanwhile revealed the club went for experienced players on short term deals in a bid to stave off the relegation fears.
“We signed players with the immediate being fighting relegation.”
