Mike Mukula, the fashion forward man

What you need to know:

Trendy. For a politician that spends most of his time with colleagues who are more bothered by electoral polls than what they are wearing, Captain Mike Mukula has a triple plus when it comes to his style, writes Gloria Haguma.

Captain Mike Mukula’s suits have not only become a signature look, but also put him on good fashion book. He is constantly seen at red carpet events looking dapper and in check.
He is probably even the only politician who has featured on the NTV Style Project fashion verdicts.
We caught up with the former Member of Parliament and he did share some of his style tricks.

What are your favourite suit colours?
I love dark-coloured suits. It is either black or navy blue suits because I adapted a corporate dress code. The two colours fit perfectly.
For the shirts, I stick to white shirts. I only wear different colours for neckties.

Which accessories work the magic?
Pocket squares, ties, and tie clips. I believe in simplicity, so I like to keep my looks less cluttered.

Your take on the brightly coloured suits? I have seen people that wear orange suits, matched with a red shirt and white crocodile skin shoes. This is hideous. Such outrageous colour blocked suits make one look like a clown.

Your top suit trick is…?
Always get the fit right. Not so small or oversize.
Stick to a single-coloured tie. I do not believe in printed and multicoloured ties because they crowd your look. Go for calm shades.
Follow the memo if you are dressing for an event. If the dress code is black tie, do not show up in jeans or shorts.
Choose a suit that works for your body type. If you fail to get this right, you are bound to end up with a mismatch.

Are there any suit trends you think men need to drop?
That business of people replacing the pocket square with a pen is ancient.

Tips on how to wear jeans?
Always pick jeans that reflect your personality. If you are an artiste such as Chameleone or Bebe cool, it is okay for you to be seen in distressed jeans. However, the likes of Obama or Putin would opt for solid colours.
