A fusion of talents

Celebrated poet Slim Emcee was the only act who offered an interesting performance at the Beyond Art event held last month at National Theatre.

The event that started late by one hour was graced by few revellers, who took their seats in the auditorium as they waited for the cold evening’s performances.

The event was organised to offer the public a feel of fused talents that included visual and performing arts, music, book launch, spoken word, among other forms.

Upcoming artistes performed songs that were filled with gospel touches and the dancers did justice by grooving to the voices and beats.

Two comedians threw some rib-cracking jokes about how Indians offer discounts in their businesses. They also joked about campus girls who use English in whatever they say thus making themselves look silly. Their jokes left the revellers laughing as they set stage for the night’s highlight, Slim Emcee.

Slim Emcee gave a 10-minute poetry (titled I hope or eye hope) performance that compensated the revellers as they applauded his talent since his poem was touching and interesting. It tackled many issues in our society.

Part of the poem reads: I hope that one day, our heart beats shall result in heart meets so we can speak a common language of love and harmony. I hope that one day we shall end blackmailing each other and opt for the white mailing since white unlike black is seen as pure.

Slim’s poem was magical. The audience gave him a standing ovation as they could no hold back their gratitude to the mastery exhibited by the young poet.
