Last weekend, Kampala Amateur Dramatic Society (KADS) held their first ever “KOSCARS” as part of their social events for members and fans.
Very popular since the 80s for their theatrical escapades with pantomimes and a loyalty to staging exceptional Shakespearean theatre;
KADS version of the Hollywood Awards interpreted as “Kampala-OSCARS”, rewarded their actors at a lavish dinner thrown at Protea Hotel, Kampala.

Categories embodied a humorous set of awards such as “Person who was fashionably Late or missed rehearesals”, “You Wear It Well” for best male and female cross dresser and “Person who always assumes the roles of Director”.
Benedikt Brenke who was away in German sent an acceptance video for his You Wear It well award, sending the guests into bouts of laughter with his expressive comic show of female character.

The prizes themselves came in “Gold”. Not your ordinary awards though, these were gold sprayed props that the actors once used on stage. Inger Kammeraat who won best actress as Veronica in God of Carnage carried home a gold sprayed Barbie. Other prizes included golden High heeled shoe, Dollar sign, Boot, a microphone for bet singer, Magda Travis, as Jimmy in Treasure Island.
This selection of awards created a humorous tie to the awards, keeping comic theatre alive with impromptu acting scenes. Dance performance and music from prior shows such as Grease’s You’re The One That I Want were revelling.

Emma Norris impeccably charmed with a bluesy sound. Richard Obonyo won (Strictly Come Dancing) best dancer award, for Grease Lightning, a category in which -not so good dancer- Denzel Mwiyeretsi was nominated (the humour). The Hamlet Award for Devotion to Shakespeare was given to Tom Adlam who commendably staged very professional Shakespeare as Much Ado About Nothing and Tragedy of Macbeth in 2014 and 2012 respectively. Dr Richard Stockley being one of the oldest members of KADS and staged several Pantomimes took home a trophy for Lifetime achievement Award.

Dressed to impress in their red carpet gowns and tuxedos, bowties and excellence to match, the awards closed with dancing as guests swerved away to a fabulous night of theatrical celebration with DJ Thomas.
Other awards included The Nutcase Award (Best sense of humour), Say yes, say no Award (Most versatile producer), The Hitchcock Award (Most innovative director).
