Amal Kiggundu is now eight months old but at one month, it was discovered he had heart problems.
“It started when he developed flu and was breathing fast. So, we took him to St Francis Hospital in Naggalama, Mukono District, where he was treated after being diagnosed with pneumonia. However, when a paediatrician examined him, he advised us to go to Mulago National Referral Hospital for further check-up,” his mother Jamila Birungi says.

At the Uganda Heart Institute, the echo report drawn by Dr Judith Namuyonga, a paediatrician cardiologist and Dr Bernard Obongonyinge, a paediatric cardiology fellow, showed that Amal has only one vessel instead of two draining the two ventricles via a large outlet ventricular septal defect.
The condition is referred to as truncus arteriosus Type 1. As a result, too much blood is going to the lungs and too little blood is reaching the body. “We were given tablets and have been going for constant review. He also falls sick frequently and we have been advised that he gets surgery before he makes one year,” Birungi says.

The family needs Shs64m to cover all expenses including surgery, transport and upkeep while in India at the Narayana Hospital. With just two months left, Amal needs your help.
