Water features are some of the landscaping ideas that people appreciated in 2018.

What you need to know:

  • Boniface Wanja, a landscaper, notes that initially, gardens were limited to grass and flowers, but this changed with time.
  • The most loved herbs include, Rosemary, lavender, mint, aloe vera, African Basil among others.
  • Kimera adds that commercial gardening has been around even through 2017 but has been more appreciated this year, people love to plant multipurpose gardens and commercial gardening does just that.

The initial landscaping purpose is to enhance beauty and provide space for recreation. As expected, a neat and beautiful compound demonstrates how organised occupants are, but also points to the benefit of using an experienced designer and good skills to bring out the best look. 2018 has been such a great year of creativity and uniqueness in the landscaping world. Here are some of the landscaping designs that have highly been appreciated this year.

Urban gardening
Ritah Masika, a florist, notes that people have appreciated urban gardening because it is profitable and at the same time makes the garden clean and unique. People have planted vegetables such as dodo, cucumber, onions, tomatoes for comsumption and enhancing the beauty of their compound.

“Urban gardening has mostly been adopted by people who love agriculture because they get to decorate their gardens with something they love.” she adds.
Urban gardening has been done using containers or planting directly in the soil. Containers are decorated to bring the beauty aspect because the initial role is beauty. Those planted in the soil are placed in extreme ends of the garden.

Paul Mutima, a container dealer, notes that container gardening has been a boom this year since flower pots and plants bring an extra beauty in the garden. Container gardening is for both crops and flowers though it needs to a lot of attention the reason some people avoid it.
Containers are in a variety of shapes, sizes with a number of prints and in all colours, the owner picks a container according to their test.
They make the garden neat, unique and appealing. The different colours make the garden bright and cool.

Functional features
Boniface Wanja, a landscaper, notes that initially, gardens were limited to grass and flowers, but this changed with time. These days people look at how best they can amply utilise the space in their gardens. For this matter, features such as swimming pools, basketball courts, children’s play area, parking space, sculptures have been added to define garden.
Functional features bring beauty to a home at the same time play a role.
“Most of them are expensive to incorporate but could bring an amazing look to the compound and the house as a whole,” he adds.

Gazebos
Wanja adds that a shade is a must have in a compound as you once in a while want to sit outside your house and enjoy the cool breeze regardless of the time.
A gazebo is one item that would bring that feel in your home. Most people have used tents, with a few seats. Others incorporate small huts which bring a great breeze as compared to tents.

Rock gardens
Masika adds that rock gardens reached the peak in 2016 and have since been appreciated. People love the gardens that have a great look and unique.
The white sea stone in rock gardens bring a whole different look from ordinary gardens.
“Though they are a bit tiresome in making, rock gardens are one of the best low maintenance garden designs that will last long and keep your garden unique and stunning,” she adds.

Spiral herb gardens
Wanja adds that herbs have been the in thing as people are going healthy of late. Most people love having medicinal plants in their gardens which bring a touch of beauty, fresh air, nice smell at night as well as provide medicine incase of sicknesses.
The most loved herbs include, Rosemary, lavender, mint, aloe vera, African Basil among others. These have been greatly planted in different homes since most people love to use African medicine these days.

Furniture
Isaac Kimera, a gardener, notes that a garden is a resting area and having a few seats in there is paramount. People have loved using plastic chairs and metallic ones as opposed to wood. This is because wooden furniture is affected by rain and too much sunshine.
He says seats are chosen in a way that complements other features in the garden because uniformity is key when setting up a garden.

Commercial gardening
Kimera adds that commercial gardening has been around even through 2017 but has been more appreciated this year, people love to plant multipurpose gardens and commercial gardening does just that.
Commercial gardening involves planting crops or fruits for sale. In this the garden owner makes money, gets food at the same time achieves beauty.
“Commercial gardening needs a lot of work because most fruits like passion, pawpaws, mangoes among others need a lot of attention since the leaves drop so often,” he says.
People have used pots, containers and other vessels to plant but some are planted directly in the soil.
