KCCA go for kill in new Caf expedition

What you need to know:

  • Soccer. The Kasasiro Boys will start as favourites considering their performances over the last two seasons that saw them earn exemption for the preliminary round.

KAMPALA. When rubbing shoulders with Africa’s elite over the past two seasons, KCCA manager Mike Mutebi stressed the need for his side to always play on the front foot and impose their game on opponents.
As the message begun to sink into his players, the report card from the last campaign read a 2-0 home win against Esperance, a team that eventually finished as losing finalists in last season’s Caf Champions League. They also managed to stretch eventual champions Esperance in a 3-2 loss after taking a 2-0 lead in Tunisia in addition to the narrow 1-0 home loss in the return leg of their debut appearance in the group stages.
After such performances, Mutebi reckons it is about time the opposition started worrying about his team’s approach.
“We just have to play our own way. We have to concentrate on what we can do. The way the teams play now is almost the same. What differs is the shape,” KCCA manager Mike Mutebi noted in the immediate aftermath of the draws.
That is the mentality he expects his side to carry forward when they play Tanzanian side Mtibwa Sugar in the first leg of the Caf Confederation Cup first round at Lugogo this evening. They will start as favourites considering their performances over the last two seasons that saw them exempted for the preliminary round.

Demanding perfection
Mutebi should consequently be able to demand decent performances and goals from a forward line that is now led by Patrick Kaddu, Allan Kyambadde and the experienced Mike Mutyaba.
Recent history has seen the Lugogo side win nine of their 11 games on the continent scoring in 10 of those except in the 1-0 loss against Esperance in July.
They are also the highest scoring side in the league thus far averaging two goals per game despite two uncharacteristic goalless draws at home to Kirinya-Jinja and Mbarara this season.
Mutebi also has a number of midfield options to choose from with Nicholas Kasozi and Isaac Kirabira often deemed surplus to requirements despite the expected absences of Julius Poloto and Saddam Juma.
Their opponents meanwhile overcame Seychelles side Northen Dynamo 5-0 on aggregate. They lie fourth in the Tanzanian domestic league having accumulated 23 points from 14 games.
