A section of Ugandan students’ access to publishers and readers in other parts of the world has been simplified after Kampala international University (KIU) launched a digital library in a bid to ease students’ learning.
"The digital library institutional repository will make easy access or free access for publishers, readers in the world and also to students to ease their learning," said the university vice chancellor, Dr Muhammad Mpezamihigo during the launch on Friday.

Dr Mpezamihigo said the purpose of the institutional repository was to share with the world research output, academic works and the authorship that have gone on for a while.
"Young people have less time to read. The culture of reading basing on previous scholars is actually at a very low percentage. About 90 percent of university students hold the latest gadgets like phones but what they do is chat on WhatsApp and other social media platforms. This system will help lecturers be able to deliver knowledge given increased access to the," he said.

According to Prof. George Nasinyama, the deputy VC- Research Innovation and Extension, there's still a challenge of lecturers who don't want to indicate their names on abstracts.
“We still don't know why they do so maybe they produce shabby work that's why they don't include their names. However, we encourage supervisors to carry out good supervision," he said
