Anti-corruption unit useless, says Matembe

Woman rights activist and former Ethics minister Miria Matembe has scoffed at the new Anti-corruption Unit headed by Lt Col Edith Nakalema under the Office of the President, saying it is another form of promoting corruption.
Speaking during the New Year prayer service at All Saints Cathedral Nakasero in Kampala yesterday, Ms Matembe said the unit is meant to take down those opposed to the NRM government.
“That anti-corruption unit is a nuisance. You cannot move in reverse. In 1996, you put an anti-corruption agency in the Vice President’s Office, eventually it was elevated to the Ministry of Ethics and Integrity, then the Inspector General of Government’s office...; then you declare that they have failed and you go back to create an anti-corruption agency ... What do you mean?” she asked.
The President launched the unit in December last year to act on complaints of corruption.
While delivering the sermon, Rev Paul Wasswa urged Ugandans to keep in prayer and trust God in order to walk into the unknown.

“We do not know what the future holds; what our health or income will be. Let’s depend on the Lord. Leave all the bad acts in 2018 and move with God in 2019,” Rev. Wasswa said.
Ms Matembe said Mr Museveni is the one who protects the corrupt people because they are the ones that sustain him in power. He is self-centred, power hungry and therefore that kind of unit [headed by Lt Col Nakalema] is useless, hopeless and nonsense,” Ms Matembe added.

Later, the Assistant Bishop of Kampala Diocese, the Rt. Rev. Hannington Mutebi said leaders need to change their bahaviour first because corruption is in people’s attitudes.
“Sin of corruption is in our hearts and we know. Let us all commit ourselves starting with us leaders,” Rev. Mutebi said.
