The body of a Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) marine soldier, who drowned in Lake Kyoga on Monday night, has been recovered.

UPDF Fisheries Protection Unit commander, Lt Julius Ankunda, confirmed that the body was recovered on Thursday. He, however, declined to disclose the particulars of the deceased saying his relatives were not yet informed about the unfortunate incident.

On Monday, a motorboat capsized in Lake Kyoga “due to strong wave” when soldiers were returning from Buyende District to their base in Namasale Sub-county in Amolatar District.  This was after the soldiers carried out a regular operation to enforce a fishing ban on Lake Kyoga, Lt Ankunda said.

Two other soldiers who were involved in the accident were rescued.

However, Ankunda says they are still searching for the three missing guns, which fell into the lake when the boat capsized.

Amolatar District police commander, Mr Samuel Abeddi, confirmed that they aware of the water accident.
