Bomb scare: Abandoned bag paralyses traffic in Kampala

Business and traffic flow on Buganda Road in Kampala city was paralysed for some time after a suitcase was found abandoned in the middle of a city road.
The Police Bomb Squad was contacted and deployed its officers.
The scene was sealed off before the suit case was opened.
However, upon checking, the suitcase contained just a pair of clothes and other personal belongings.
Police have been on high alert after a January terror attack on a hotel and office complex in the neighbouring Kenya.
Security has been enhanced and counter-terror measures have been put in place to secure the country, according to police.

Upon opening the suit case a pair of clothes and other personal belongings were found inside

According to an eye witness, an unidentified man disembarked a taxi and dropped the bag before the car sped off.
“We were here relaxing, then a taxi just came over here, parked and a man came out with that suit case and dropped there. He entered the taxi and it sped off. We didn't know what was there so we decided to alert the police," said an eye witness.

The Kampala metropolitan deputy police spokesperson, Mr Luke Owoyesigyire said they were tipped off by the public before they deployed bomb squad to establish if there was anything dangerous.
"We were alerted by the public about an abandoned bag. Our officers quickly responded and when we checked, there was nothing harmful to the public. The bag is here at police as we try to establish the owner," he said.
