DPP accused of delaying justice in Bakaleke case

Kampala. The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has been accused of delaying justice in the case in which fugitive senior police officer Siraje Bakaleke is wanted over alleged fraud.
This was after prosecution led by Ms Abigail Agaba sought an adjournment in the case involving Mr Bakaleke and six other police officers.
They are facing charges in relation to allegations of abuse of office, embezzlement, obtaining money by false pretence and kidnap.
One of the defence lawyers, Mr Cyrus Mugabi said the State had failed to apprehend Mr Bakaleke for the last six months.
“If the State has failed to apprehend accused one (Mr Bakaleke), they could either strike him off the charge sheet or bring him to court immediately so that the trial for the rest can go on. Otherwise, any other order is an infringement of their rights to a fair trial,” Mr Mugabi said.
In response, Ms Agaba said she would need the adjournment to seek the DPP’s opinion in the matter.
The trial Grade One Magistrate, Mr Moses Nabende, adjourned the matter to April 24 to allow the state seek the DPP’s opinion.
Mr Bakaleke is believed to have run into exile.
