Mr Patrick Yoorach had high hopes of getting a good grade in O’level that would help him advance his educational level for a much “better” employment in future.

His hopes were, however, frustrated by a poor grade in last year’s Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examinations result released on Thursday.
Mr Yoorach who is the Speaker of Bardege Division council in Gulu Municipality scored aggregate 70.
The 33-year-old father of five children sat from Gulu Central High Adult learning centre.

Although news of such results may not sound impressive, Mr Yoorach, however, says he is “happy” with his performance.
“I am happy that the results are mine and not fabricated. I am the one who sat for it and never hired anyone. If I had hired anyone, I would complain,” Mr Yoorach told Daily Monitor in a telephone interview on Friday.
He noted that the bad results were partly due to his busy schedules as council speaker adding that family responsibilities were also to blame.
“Being the council speaker made me to miss most of the classes; I would sometimes arrive late for classes or completely miss out. Besides I am a father of five children and juggling family and studies wasn’t easy for me,” he said.

He added that, “Even when we were going for examination, I had Malaria. I was actually not supposed to sit for the examination at all but I proceeded because I had already made full school fees payment.”

Mr Yoorach however says he will have to repeat senior four so as to attain the right grades which will push him for arts subject in Advanced Level education.

“All I wanted was to get good grades for an arts combination in A’level but I failed to get it, I will have to repeat senior four. No one is too old to stop studying, I will continue pursuing education until I achieve my dreams,” Mr Yoorach said.
Yoorach is not the only district council official in Northern Uganda whose performance in last year’s UCE has been shocking.
In the neighbouring Lira District, Mr George Opio, the Lira District Speaker scored aggregates 66.
