Just like it has been in previous years, the opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party leaders have vowed to shun the national Independence celebrations slated for October 9, 2019, and are set to hold parallel celebrations at their headquarters in Najjanakumbi.

Addressing journalists at their offices on Monday, the party spokesperson Mr Ibrahim Ssemuju Nganda said it is useless to celebrate the Independence when 70 per cent of Ugandans are poor and cannot pay school fees for their children.

“Independence is not only about passing time, but to celebrate the achievements the country has achieved. The government is just wasting a lot of money in these celebrations,” he said.

Mr Nganda revealed that as a party, they have organised a lecture which will be delivered by their former presidential candidate Dr Kizza Besigye about how the country attained its Independence, look at how other countries are faring, among other topics.

He also advised the government to use the money for celebrations to do other things, just like in Tanzania where such celebrations were abolished.
