Family in search of missing son

Missing boy. Nelson Sanya

What you need to know:

  • Abducted. Nelson Sanya, 17, went missing on May 2 after unknown people abducted him from their home in Kampala.

Kampala. The family of Mr William Akollo, has since last week lost sleep over the disappearance of their son, Nelson Sanya, under unclear circumstances.

Mr Akollo, in company of his daughter Veronica Ropani, with tears rolling down their cheeks, yesterday narrated to this newspaper the mental torture they have gone through since May 2 when the 17-year-old went missing.

“We found a letter written in his handwriting at home and the message was terrifying,” Mr Akollo said yesterday.
He adeed: “We have searched everywhere. We have reported to police but we have not had any leads to where Nelson is. If he was kidnapped or killed, let the people holding him inform us.”

Sanya’s letter
The 64-word letter, a copy this newspaper has seen, reads: “Some people have come home and they have jumped over the fence. One of them is having a gun and the other one is having a knife. They have a car parked outside the gate. They have broken a glass but I do not know which glass and they are inside the house. All have covered their face with masks and are putting on gloves.”

Sanya, a Senior One student at Our Lady of Africa S.S, Mukono, went missing from their home in Nakawuka, Entebbe Road. A case of missing person was registered at Nakawuka Police Station and the search for him commenced with no success.

Ms Ropani, who brought Sanya to Kampala at the beginning of the year from West Nile to get quality education in the capital, said the boy did not have friends in the neighbourhood who might have misled him since he was new and did not speak Luganda.

“Our maid, who later [that day] left to go to Nakawa, a Kampala surbub, said Nelson asked for a bicycle which he rode around the compound. However, we were shocked to come back and Nelson was missing. Those who took him have not called to ask for anything and we do not know if he is alive or dead,” she said.
The family narrated that they left the boy riding a bicycle at home. Other family members were in Nakawa and they hoped to join Sanya later that day.

When they eventually did, they were shocked to find the gate wide open, a television screen and other household items placed on the verandah.
Inside the house, the chairs were displaced and Sanya’s bedroom had blood stains. Some blood was also found on the stairs of the house.
The family reported to police and officers swung into action taking blood samples, among other things.

However, no more details have been given to the family.
Mr Akollo said, they plan to meet officers carrying out the investigations today. Efforts to get a comment from police was futile by press time.
