Fanfare in Kabarole as Kenyan schools join Uganda’s in MDD competition

At least 60 Secondary Schools from across Uganda were joined by a total of 12 schools from Kenya for the national Music Dance and Drama (MDD) competition currently taking place in Kabarole District, western Uganda.

The competition that is held under the auspices of the Ministry of Education and Sports partnering with URA and Ministry of Health is taking place at three venues namely: Nyakasura, Kyebambe Girls and St Leo’s College Kyegobe.

The 2019 secondary schools MDD competition is under the theme; “Vision 2040 - harnessing young potential for Uganda social economic transformation.”

The participants started coming in on Sunday and the competition was officially opened on Monday by the Kabarole Resident District commissioner, Mr Steven Asiimwe, accompanied by the Kabarole District Chairman, Mr Richard Rwabuhinga.

Mr Asiimwe commended the schools for participating in this year’s national competitions saying that it will deepen regional integration for a common goal.

According to Mr Frank Manyindo, the Nyakasura Head Teacher, the competition will end on Saturday (tomorrow) with a concert and an awarding ceremony for the best schools and individual performers.

The students have been competing in; Drama, creative dance, instrumental, speech, folksong, poem, western choral, African style, Folk dance, African original composition and sight singing among others.

The Assistant Commissioner for Secondary Education, Mr Martin Osban, said they want to use this year’s event to harness the potential of youth to ensure that the country is transformed.

“MDD is a critical government program and curriculum for secondary education to achieve national unity and preserve national heritage,” he said.
Some of the schools which have participated include; Kyebambe SS, Nyakasura SS, St Maria Goretti, West Ville High School and Budo SS.

Other schools in attendance include; Sacred Heart Mushanga from Sheema, London College of St Lawrence from Wakiso and defending champion Mackay College, while those from Kenya include Ololuluga School, Starehe Boys’ Centre among others.

Before announcing of the 2019 MDD champion, organisers will begin with a concert in the morning where best performers in every item will present again.
The event has been open to the public and big crowds have been coming in to enjoy the presentations.
