Former soldier throws grenade in land meeting, gets killed

Bukedea- A former UPDF soldier has been hacked to death after he threw a grenade in a land meeting in Atapar Village, Aligoi Sub-county in Bukedea District.

The Saturday incident is said to have been trigged off after the deceased, identified as Grace Olupot, 45, disagreed at the manner in which the land was parcelled out to his brothers yet the share that he had been allocated was not enough.

The LC2 chairperson for Aligoi Parish, Mr Augustine Okwi, said he had been called by the members of Irarak clan to witness the division and demarcation of the land when the incident happened.

Mr Okwi said as the meeting progressed, Olupot turned rowdy at the clan members, saying the land that had been allocated to him was so small and that the clan heads needed to have looked into his cry.

“With heedless response, the aggrieved stepped out of the meeting, returned brandishing a gun and a grenade that he threw in the crowd of clan members,” Mr Okwi recounts.

He said although the military explosive did not explode, members charged at the ex–soldier, chased after him until the mob narrowed on him at Ogatuny Village, killing him.

Mr Michael Odongo, the East Kyoga regional police spokesperson, said they are investigating the matter.

Mr Odongo said the deceased suffered deep cuts on his head.
“We took the body for postmortem in Mbale Regional Referral Hospital, but we have also picked some of the particles of the alleged grenade for tests to certain whether it is a real or something else,” he added.
