According to a UPDF statement, the visiting general told top army officers during a meeting at the Ministry of Defence headquarters in Mbuya on Monday that France is willing offer training to Uganda’s air forces.

“Maj Gen Gernez in his submissions pledged support from the French Air force in Djibouti to Uganda People's Defence Air Force in terms of further training and other military to military engagements,” the statement reads in part

The French troops are already training UPDF soldiers in mountain warfare in Rwenzori and peacekeeping in Singo and French language training in Jinja.

In May, the two armies carried out a joint military exercise code-named “Mountain Ghost”.

Lt Gen Joseph Musanyufu, who represented the Chief of Defence Forces,  Gen David Muhoozi said:  “The support has gone a long way in opening UPDF’s doors to the French speaking missions which was not the case before as language was our main barrier."

The meeting was also attended by Maj Gen Gavas Mugyenyi, the Deputy Commander of the Air force, Maj Gen Willis Byarugaba, the UPDF Chief of Training and the UPDF Spokesperson, Brig. Richard Karemire.
