Lyantonde. Councillors in Lyantonde Town Council have asked the Inspector General of Government to investigate the town clerk over what they call inflated cost of repairing two garbage trucks.
The trucks, which were reportedly repaired at a cost of Shs29m last month broke down again after operating for three weeks.
“As we wait for the IGG to investigate the two district officials, we are going to mobilise people to dump garbage at town council offices because of failure by the authorities to collect garbage,” Mr Ali Ddamulira Bongo, the Kooki D Ward councillor, said in an interview on Monday.
Mr Lawrence Mulinde, the youth male councillor, said residents were tasking them to explain why the town is chocking on garbage.
“We want the IGG to compel the town clerk to explain how the funds were used, we are fed up of making excuses,” Mr Mulinde said.
Ms Annet Namwanje, a member of the social services committee, said they were surprised to receive information that the trucks are no longer functional.
“It is quite evident that the cost [of repairing garbage trucks] was inflated and the quality of work was poor since the spare parts used were too cheap and that is the reason the vehicles broke down,” Ms Namwanje.
When contacted, Mr Martin Rodgers Ssentongo, the town clerk, dismissed allegations.
“All the funds that were spent on repairing the trucks were properly accounted for,” he said.

Residents usually take the solid waste to a collection centre from where it is collected and taken to the landfill about 15km outside the town.
Mr Ssentongo said the town spends Shs3m monthly on collecting garbage.
