  • Mr Dan Muganga, the Nakasongola Resident Commissioner, and head of the district security committee, promised to get back to our reporter after ascertaining the status of key witnesses.

A key witness and mother of a seven- year-old boy who was gruesomely murdered by a machete wielding man at Wabigalo Village in Nakasongola District is seeking protection from the police, fearing for her personal safety.

Ms Florence Nanyombi, 38, who has since sought refuge at her father’s home in Kyalubambula Village in Kakooge Sub-county, says her life is in danger since she is the only surviving witness, who has recorded a statement with police.

“I am afraid that this man, who brutally attacked me and hacked my son during broad daylight might come and end my life,” she said.

“During burial, we were promised protection by the security. We last saw a policeman visiting our family on December 8,” Ms Nanyombi said on Wednesday.
Members of her family are afraid too. Her father, Mr Yokosofati Balwayile, 82, says they could be targeted.
“We appeal to our leaders including the district chairperson and the Resident District Commissioner to secure security for our family,” he said.

Mr Steven Kitakule, the local council chairperson of Kyalubambula Village, said: “I escorted Ms Nanyombi to Nakasongola Central Police to make her statement on December 11 but police is to deploy officers.”
Ms Caroline Akoth, the Savana region police commander, yesterday said she was receiving some important message that needed to be quickly attended too.

Mr Dan Muganga, the Nakasongola Resident Commissioner, and head of the district security committee, promised to get back to our reporter after ascertaining the status of key witnesses.
“Thank you for that information. Let me find out from police about the safety of this family,” Mr Muganga said.

However, we were not able to get feedback from him by press time.
The Nakasongola District chairperson, Mr Sam Kigula, said: “We appeal for more security personnel. All issues raised by the locals are pertinent. Nakasongola has not had a police car for more than eight months.”
