Lugogo shooting victim laid to rest in Kitgum

KITGUM- Lugogo shooting victim Kenneth Watmon Akena was on Wednesday laid to rest amidst calls from a section of political and religious leaders tasking government to expeditiously and independently investigate who killed him.

Akena, a child rights activist was sent off by hundreds of mourners from different walks of life who thronged his ancestral home in Gang Dyang, Pandwong Division, Kitgum Municipality.

Fr Christopher Ojok, the parish priest of Omiya Onyima Catholic Parish said such death calls for serious investigations.

Akena is alleged to have been shot by Matthew Kanyamunyu on Saturday at Lugogo Forest Mall parking area in Kampala after his car reportedly dented the city businessman's car.

According to former lecturer at the Zoology department of Makerere University, the continued melting of snow on top of Mountain Rwenzori is likely to impact on the livelihoods negatively.

He later succumbed to bullet wounds at Norvik Hospital.

"The government, judiciary, security and every one in society should act to ensure justice. Akena’s death was gruesome," Fr Ojok said.

He asked members of the bereaved family to turn to God for comfort.

The priest, however, criticised some media outlets saying they are promoting tribalism through their biased reporting.

"I have read some of the headlines written by one of media outlets and circulated on social media, it's very tribalistic, this is not an issue between the Acholi or Munyankole, it's a national issue that should be addressed by the government," Fr Ojok said.

Ms Catherine Oketayot Lowila, the Kitgum District Woman MP asked the Inspector General of police Gen Kale Kayihura to ensure that civilians who have firearms are vetted.
