Makerere suspends two students for protesting tuition increment

Makerere University management has suspended two students for protesting the 15 percent tuition increment.

At least 20 students were Tuesday arrested for attempting to march to the office of the president to present a petition to President Museveni to have the 15 percent cumulative policy scrapped on grounds that it was unfair to privately sponsored students.

The students were, however, released Tuesday evening on police bond.

The vice chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe last evening told this reporter that two students had been suspended for allegedly inciting violence.
He named the two as Mollie Siperia (the Guild Representative Councillor for School of psychology and one Frank Bwambale.

"Well all I can tell you is I wasn't surprised at all that I got it (suspension letter). That's the trend now at Makerere University. Everyone who tries to express themselves is suppressed to the core. It was no surprise to me at all," Ms Spellia told this reporter last evening.

Relatedly, warning letters were issued to several other students who had allegedly engaged in yesterday's protest.

However, the guild president, Mr Julius Kateregga last night said the student leadership will not sit and watch as their fellow students are treated unfairly.
"We are going to act accordingly," he said.
By last night, there were reports that students had mobilised to protest management's decision to suspend their colleagues.
