KAMPALA.

US President Barack Obama on Tuesday named Ms Deborah R. Malac as the new ambassador to Uganda, replacing Scott DeLisi, whose last day in the country was yesterday.

The White House in a statement said Mr Obama “announced his intent to nominate Ambassador Deborah R. Malac, Nominee for Ambassador to the Republic of Uganda.”

Ambassador Malac, a career member of the senior foreign service, has been the United States envoy to Liberia since May 2012. She previously served in the State Department as the Director of the Office of East African Affairs from 2011 to 2012. Prior to that, she served as director in the Office of Career Development and Assignments from 2009 to 2011, among other diplomatic duties.
Her appointment will however fully take effect after vetting by Congress.

After almost 30 years in foreign service, Mr DeLisi, in an interview with this newspaper last week, revealed he was retiring from service.
