Kampala. National Water and Sewerage Corporation has said they have started mapping out areas around Kampala, Wakiso and Mukono districts to construct 1,000 stand pipes and 250 public toilets.
Addressing journalists in Kampala last Friday, Mr Silver Mugisha, the NWSC managing director, said the current cholera outbreak in parts of the city shows lack of hygienic practices.

“You can have piped water and adequate sanitation but if you eat faeces, you will definitely contract cholera,” he said.
Last week, cholera broke out in the city suburb of Kabowa in Rubaga Division, killing one according to the Ministry of Health.
The ministry attributed the outbreak to poor hygiene and sanitation in the area.

Mr Emmanuel Ainebyoona, the ministry’s senior spokesperson, said 18 cumulative cases have since been registered out of which two patients remain in admission at Naguru hospital.
Mr Mugisha also said the corporation was scaling up the service coverage accelerated programme launched in 2013 to provide 100 per cent access to piped water and sanitation services to the country to prevent future out-breaks.
He said the public toilets will be constructed in schools and market places.

“It is not our mandate to build public toilets. That is the role of Kampala Capital City Authority but we are doing it as our corporate social responsibility which will cost 20 million Euros (Shs84 billion) from both government and our internally generated funds,” Mr Mugisha said.
The project will cover Kawempe, Rubaga and Makindye divisions in Kampala.
