One shot dead, officer admitted after suspect tried to grab his gun

One person has been shot dead and two others admitted to hospital with injuries after police attempt to arrest a suspect in Rukungiri District.

David Monday, a resident of Licence cell, Rwentondo parish, Eastern division was shot dead on Thursday while his son, Amos Bashasha and a special police constable only identified as John Bosco attached to Buyanja police station are currently admitted to hospital.
The shooting happened after the officer was assigned to arrest Monday for assaulting and hacking his son Bashasha whom he accused of stealing his coffee.

Mr Laban Magezi, the LCI secretary for Kicence cell said Monday attacked Bashasha with a panga and nearly cut him to death on Wednesday night.

“As the police tried to arrest Monday, a scuffle ensued between them. He tried to grab the gun from the officer. During the scuffle, the officer shot himself in the leg. He then turned the gun and shot Monday who died instantly," he said.

Rukungiri District police commander, Moses Nanoka confirmed the shooting and killing but declined to divulge more details.
"I have no comment now but we’re investigating the case. Details will be given to the press later," he said.
He warned residents against taking the law into their hands if aggrieved.
"We have institutions to help solve disputes," he added.
