Over 50 households caught fire and burnt to ash in Nsangayo cell at Bujjumba village, Buggala Island in Kalangala District on Wednesday night.
The incident happened at around 8pm with the fire destroying rental houses belonging to the late Lawrence Mazinga. Property estimated to be worth Shs50m is said to have been destroyed.

Police managed to reach the place in time but unfortunately lacked necessary equipment to stop the fire; they arrived with one fire extinguisher before they improvised with a road construction watering truck.
Despite all their efforts, nothing was saved due to the nature of the houses; they were all temporary wooden houses built closely in one area.
According to Ivan Tenywa, the Officer in Charge of Kalangala District Police Station, no resident was injured and parents managed to save their children in time.
β€œIt is not clear what exactly caused this fire, but our preliminary investigations show that it could have been a burning cigarette head dropped accidently or …[fire] from a charcoal stove left in one of the rooms by residents who had gone to drink in a nearby bar,” Mr Tenywa said.
