Police arrest two for killing their retired UPDF brother

Lira police are holding two brothers accused of masterminding the death of their sibling, a retired Uganda Peoples Defense Force (UPDF) solider.

The suspects (names withheld) are both residents of Barpii village, Telela Parish in Aromo Sub County, Lira District.

They are accused of killing Richard Atim, who retired from UPDF Army recently, reportedly over a land dispute.

The suspects are said to have assaulted Atim before tying him on a tree for several hours leading to his death.  

Controversy between the deceased and his brothers is said to have started from the sale of their family land without his consent.

Mr David Elic, the Aromo Sub County LC III chairperson, said the deceased was scheduled to appear before the clan leadership to respond to accusations of disturbing his family members.

He said the deceased who returned from Somalia in March, 2019 was furious when he found out that part of their family land had been sold by siblings while he was away.

Murder cases emanating from the land conflicts in Lira District have been on rise over the past few months. 

About six murder cases relating to land conflicts have been recorded in Lira over the past four months.
