Police summons local tabloid editor over Aine picture

Police has summoned the editor of a local tabloid over publication of pictures of what the paper said is the dead body of Mr Christopher Aine.

In a letter dated January 7, Mr. Odongo Mark Paul, Deputy Director Criminal Investigations and Intelligence Directorate and Special Investigations Division summoned the Chief Editor of Red Pepper Publications for an interview and statement recording.

“The Special Investigations Division is conducting investigations into the publications titled AINE "BODY" EMERGES that was carried on pages 1 and 4 in the Red Pepper dated 07/01/2016,” the summons reads.

Pursuant to the sections 27A of the Police Act, you are required to report to Special Investigations Division Kireka, today Thursday 07/01/2016 at 1630hrs, to assist in providing information in respect to the matter being investigated,” it continues.
The managing editor at the Red Pepper Publications, Mr Ben Byarabaha confirmed receipt of the summons.
“ Yes I have received the summons by the police and I am already there,” he said when spoken to.

The development follows claims by Aine’s family members that the body published by the paper and shared on social media is of their son.
Ms Ritah Babirye Aine, a twin sister to Aine says that her brother has a scar above the eye which he got in an accident and a gap between the teeth; these features are visible on the pictures of the dead body published in local media and being shared on social media.
“I am the twin sister of Aine. According to the photo in the newspapers, this is Christopher Aine,” Ms Babirye added.

However, Police spokesperson, Mr Fred Enanga refutes claims by Aine’s family saying that they cannot rely on a photo in the newspapers to make such conclusions hence the need to investigate the source of the picture.
It is not known where the pictures came from or who took them or whether they are genuine. No one has so far claimed responsibility for them.
Mr Aine, the head of security for independent presidential candidate Mr Amama Mbabazi has been missing since last year with both police and the Go Forward camp accusing each other of hiding him.
