Rakai to spend Shs400m on school latrines

Rakai District has earmarked nearly Shs400m for the construction of pit-latrines in various primary schools.
Mr Robert Abenaitwe, the chief administrative officer, said the decision was reached at by different stakeholders in the education sector after realising that lavatory facilities at various schools were in a sorry state.

“School head teachers and other stakeholders had earlier reported the poor state of their pit-latrines and as a district, we decided to focus on that this financial year,” he said last week.
Each school will receive two five-stance pit-latrines for both girls and boys.

Beneficiaries
According to Mr Abenaitwe, construction had already started in 15 schools, including Kanyogoga, Kirangira, Ssemuto, Magabi-Gayaza, Kajju, Kisaasa, Kisweere and Kiwenda.
Others are Kirawula, Lwemisege, Nezikokolima, Kakumbiro, Edwina and Kayonza-Kacheera.
Out of the Shs33.87b district budget, the education sector takes Shs15.91b which represents 47.07 per cent.

Meanwhile, the district plans to give Shs822m to Kalibbala Kamya Memorial SS in Lwamaggwa Sub-county for rehabilitation of classrooms.
Mr John Baptist Kimbowa, the district education officer, said the money is in fulfilment of President Museveni’s pledge when he visited the school in March 2017.
“The President pledged to construct and rehabilitate Kalibbala Kamya Memorial SS and we are pleased that funds were released and construction is ongoing,” he said.
