Retired Bishop of Busoga Cyprian Bamwoze dead

Busoga's pioneer bishop, Rt Rev Cyprian Bamwoze has died.
Bamwoze who has been in and out of hospital since 2015 breathed his last at the Uganda Cancer Institute in Mulago on Monday morning. Bukedi Diocese Bishop Samuel George Egesa told Daily Monitor that Rt Rev Bamwoze died after a long battle with blood cancer (leukaemia).

Despite his unstable health, he had always resisted being treated in private health facilities saying that senior figures who seek treatment there only delay government moves towards putting in place a public health system that caters for all Ugandans.

In June 2016, the Bishop lost his wife Naome Bamwoze which reportedly weakened his life further. In February 2017, Dr Bamwoze was admitted at Nakasero hospital after having stomach complications.

On March 14, 2018, New Vision online reported that the retired bishop was battling leukemia and needed about Shs100m for treatment at the Uganda Cancer Institute.

His nephew, the Rev. Can. Eric Kasirye, Bamwoze told the publication that the Dr Bamwoze was diagnosed with cancer in August 2017 and had since been in and out of hospital.
Bamwoze’s cancer was at stage IV, characterised by progressive painless enlargement of lymphoid tissue throughout the blood and suffers extra lymphatic involvement.

Bishop Bamwoze, who hailed from Nakakabala in Kamuli District, was consecrated in 1972 after the creation of Busoga Diocese from Namirembe.
He, however, retired in 1998 after years of turbulence among his flock who accused him of maladministration and arrogance. He was succeeded by Dr Michael Kyomya.
