A Kampala University (KU) student who was on Wednesday night shot dead by a security guard had just buried his father on Saturday November 31, 2019.

Isaac Katagwa, 26, who was pursuing a bachelor's degree in hotel management, tourism and leisure at KU Jinja campus, was shot dead from close range allegedly by a guard attached to Star React Security Company after a heated argument.

The deceased friends have said that Katagwa buried his father on Saturday, four days before meeting his own death.

Mr Isaac Imaka, a journalist and friend to the deceased, on Thursday said the victim's father, Christopher Katagwa, was on Saturday laid to rest in Wakitaka Village, Mafubira Sub County in Jinja District.

"Katagwa Sr was from the famous Nabeta family which boasts of Magistrate Nabeta, among other prominent persons," he said.

The investigators are following reports that the deceased and his alleged killer were embroiled in a 'heated argument' prior to the shooting.

A student who spoke to this reporter on condition of anonymity said that she heard a gunshot at around 08.45pm and ran towards the administration block only to find Katagwa’s lifeless body lying on the ground.

“After hearing the gunshot sound, all students including me ran to the administration block for refuge only to find our colleague’s lifeless body lying on the ground,” she said.

"Initially we thought a robber had been shot at, but later we learnt that it was a student," a patron of one of the nearby bars said.

The Kiira Region Police Spokesperson Ms Diana Nandaula, on Thursday said the killer gun has been recovered and the suspect is being detained at Jinja Central Police Station.

“We have so far interrogated the guard and claims that he suspected the deceased was a criminal, but we are still continuing with investigations,” she said.

The victim’s body was taken to Jinja hospital mortuary for post-mortem.
