A 21-year-old Senior Five student of Peace High School in Katakwi District has reportedly committed suicide after students’ savings could not be traced from the safety box that he was entrusted with.

Martin Wacha, a resident of Kapujan Sub-county in Toroma County, ended his life on Friday upon realising that Shs27,000 that was meant to be distributed among fellow students in their savings’ association had gone missing at their home.
The local council III chairperson of Kapujan, Mr Martin Okello, said the deceased could have taken poison out of frustration.
“He was the one who had the key to the box. Upon finding out that the money had been stolen, he allegedly committed suicide,” Mr Okello said.

Mr Okello said the matter was reported to police who said investigations were still ongoing.
Mr Paul Abunyang, one of the students at Peace High School, said the deceased and his group members were planning to distribute the money among themselves because some of the Senior Four students in the group were leaving after completing their examinations.
“I have a feeling the money was stolen at their home,” he added.
Mr Walter Elakas, the Katakwi District chairperson, said it was very unfortunate for the student to end his life.
