Police in Iganga District are investigating circumstances under which a 50-year-old man died following a heavy downpour on Friday night.

Police have identified the deceased as Edirisa Bamu, a taxi driver in Iganga town and a resident of Buseyi village in Nakalama Sub-county.

Mr Hatimu Bwogere, an eyewitness, said the deceased tried to avoid being knocked by a speeding trailer along the Iganga-Jinja highway, but lost his balance, fell into a trench and was swept to death by running waters.

Residents said that the pressure at which the water was running was too much and by the time they rushed to rescue him, it was too late.

“We saw him being taken by the water. We tried to rescue him but the pressure was too much and he was swept away,” Mr Bwogere said.

Mr David Ndaula, the Iganga District Police Commander, said investigations are ongoing to establish what could have caused Bamu’s death and asked the public to mind about their personal safety during this rainy season.

Police recovered the body and handed it over to his relatives for burial.
