KAMPALA. Two private security guards and a civilian have been arrested after thugs attempted to rob Barclays Bank in Nakulabye, Rubaga Division in Kampala on Tuesday.
Robbers attempted to gain access to the bank by cutting a window but were reportedly denied by burglar proofs. The incident happened in the wee hours of the morning.
Sources allegedly said two thugs shattered the glass window, and entered the bank and vanished with bags containing unspecified items, but the claim was dismissed by Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson Patrick Onyango.

Mr Onyango confirmed the crime at the Nakulabye branch, but said the robbers did not enter the bank. He said they only damaged the window in an attempt to gain access inside.
“The thugs were two and were wearing hoods. They cut the window but failed to enter the bank. This incident is under investigation,” he said.

Contradicting reports
By yesterday, there were contradicting reports about the failed robbery as some sources said the private security guards of Special Group Africa connived with the thugs while others insisted the watchmen were dazed with chloroform.
“I saw police surrounding this place at around 3am and the guards were carried into the police car seemingly unconscious. They looked like they had been chloroformed,” a witness said.
Mr Onyango declined to confirm whether the guards had been arrested on suspicion of collusion.
Efforts to speak to Barclays Bank were futile as the communication officer’s contact was off.
