Mayuge- Sorrow gripped residents of Nabalongo, Mayuge District when a five-year-old boy drowned in a stream as he tried to search for one of his shoes on Boxing Day.

The toddler has been identified as Timothy Isiko, the son of Mr James Waiswa, a resident of Wanyange,  Jinja District.

The boy reportedly travelled with his parents from Jinja to celebrate Christmas at Mr Bwesweri Gaboli’s home in Nabalongo village.

According to residents, the boy reportedly joined other children to play on Thursday.

Mr Fred Lwayi, the village Local Council I chairperson said that as they played near a stream, one of Isiko’s shoe fell in the running water.

He said that the boy drowned as he tried to retrieve the shoe from the water.

“Being a child, he didn’t know that it was dangerous to step in the stream,” Mr Lwayi said.

Mr Iman Mukonya who participated in the search for the boy said the body was found at the extreme end of the stream.

Police handed over the body to family members for burial as investigations continue.
