Two people have died on spot and at least 14 injured after an accident involving five vehicles at Kalandazzi near Mitalamaria Catholic Parish on the Kampala-Masaka highway.

According to the area traffic police, the accident occurred at around 3 am on Saturday morning.

One of the survivors, Mr Robert Miyingo told Daily Monitor that the accident was caused by two vehicles; a semi truck registration number UAY 101L that was ferrying bananas from Masaka heading to Kampala, collided head-on with a sand truck registration number UAX 561T that was heading to Lwera sand mine in Kalungu district.

The driver of another sand truck registration number UAR 355C lost control, veered off the road and overturned.

While traffic police and residents were rescuing the casualties, journalists trying to cover what was at the scene, two other sand trucks overturned too due to brakes failure.

Eyewitnesses said this was due to slippery road, speeding and absence of accident road signs in place. These vehicles registration numbers; UAY 729P and UAY 487Q were also heading to Lwera sand mine.

Mr Benard Wabwire, the officer in charge of traffic police at Buwama police station identified the deceased as Mr Yusuf Kizito and Mr Jafar Ssemugera, all truck drivers and residents of Bulenga.

The bodies and the injured were taken to Gombe and Nkozi hospitals for post mortem and treatment respectively.

All wreckages of the vehicles were towed to Buwama police station as investigations continue.
